13 Ways of Looking
| About the Artist |
I’ve been making art since 1993. That was during
a period when I was writing a lot of poetry, but
was beginning to sense that the word was not
enough to express the things I had to express. I
completed a series of five pieces,Window Series.
They combined both images and words: images
(mostly created by me) collaged from a number of
photographic processes, and words taken from
one of my poems. The series, Lonely Planet Boy,
on this site, is a recent series of prints, and it also
uses images (none of which I created) combined
with lines from another of my poems. As time
passed, I found myself less and less interested in
poetry, in and of itself, than I was interested in
visual art. In 2000, I entered two pieces in the
Elkhart (Indiana) Regional, at the Midwest
Museum of American Art. Much to my surprise,
the jurors accepted both pieces, and I was off,
maybe not to see the Wizard, but to a place I’d
never been before.
